Boone Hall is Updated to Accommodate Cutting Edge Scientific Research

Boonies will soon have a new home; the newly renovated Boone Hall. Key components of the summer remodel are seven research labs to accommodate cutting edge research. Students, faculty, and staff will return this fall to an updated building that includes updated classroom and lab facilities, new boilers, energy efficient windows and many other upgrades. The renovation will be completed just in time for classes to begin. Watch for details regarding the rededication of Boone Hall coming this fall!

The renovation of Boone Science Hall did not slow down summer research at The College of Idaho.  Research labs of Drs. Sara Heggland and Mark Gunderson are bustling with activity in the Teaching Learning (a.k.a., Laboratory) Center (TLC) for the summer.  Dr. Heggland’s lab studies the effects of the heavy metal Cadmium on bone cells while Dr. Gunderson’s lab studies the effects of environmental toxins on Alligator mississippensis. These projects are funded through The C of I’s $1.75 million portion of an NIH-INBRE grant renewal awarded in May 2009.

The Biology 2010 summer NIH-INBRE fellows were Michelle Simmonds (Dr. Heggland’s lab) and Kelsey Jesser and Melissa Pickett (Dr. Gunderson’s lab).  MST-MRI Fellow Dayne Filer also worked with Dr. Heggland this summer. This 10-week summer research program culminated with the 9th Annual NIH-INBRE Research Conference hosted by the University of Idaho in Moscow, ID. All students presented their summer research at the conference.

TLC is not the only place housing scientific research this summer.  Other biology faculty spent their summer doing research in trailer space outside of Boone. Dr. Yensen directed projects studying ground squirrels supported by a Zoo Boise grant. Dr. Mansfield wrapped up his year on sabbatical with continuation of his Owyhee River Project.“This summer has just been a testament to the fact that as long as you have a roof over your head, you can do the science,” Mansfield said. “It will be wonderful to have a new space, but it’s really about the people of this department, especially these students who are such eager, enthusiastic, smart, capable young scientists.”
