The College of Idaho
In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, we provide registrants the option of a non-confidential or confidential credential file. You must designate on the Declaration of Option form the type of file you prefer. After printing the form, sign, date and return it to Career Services via mail or fax: 208-459-5849.
You may wish to consider the following when selecting non-confidential or confidential references:
- A non-confidential file allows you to know exactly what your references have written about you.
- Some employers prefer confidential references.
- Whichever option you choose, select people who know you well and will write fair evaluations.
NEW REGISTRANTS
Reference forms indicate to the reference writer and the reference reader which option you have selected. Option I - Non-Confidential (Open) file: with this file option, you have access to your credential file and can view letters of reference. Option II - Confidential (Closed) File: with this file option, you waive the right to view letters of reference. No one will be allowed to maintain a "mixed" file containing both confidential and non-confidential references.
REACTIVATING REGISTRANTS
Your file will remain confidential (closed to you) or non-confidential (open to you) indefinitely, with appropriate forms being sent to you upon reactivation. However, if you request a change of option, you will need to collect new references. We will destroy the current references in your file or return them to the original writers at your request, possibly to secure new references. We cannot change previously collected references from one option to another since the writers of the first references assumed they would be kept confidential or non-confidential, whichever the case may be, and we must honor their rights as well as yours. It is your responsibility to provide current addresses (including zip code) for references that we must return to the writer.
