Home School Students

Students with a home-school background are welcome at The College of Idaho, and their number continues to grow. We find that most of our home-schooled students have the ability to "think outside the box" and work independently--exactly the attributes you'll need to succeed here.

Many homeschoolers choose to apply to The College of Idaho during their junior year of high school. Our Presidential Priority Program is well suited to home educated students. To qualify for this program, simply submit your application before July 15 of your senior year. You can then submit the rest of your documents intermittently as long as the entire application packet is complete by October 15. Getting a jump-start on your application may entitle you to better scholarship packages than those who wait to apply later in the year.

Home-educated students are eligible for financial aid at The College of Idaho. Scholarships are based on your achievements, test scores, honors or Advanced Placement (AP) exams you've taken, and any community involvement you may have completed.

To apply, please provide the following documentation:

  • List of subjects learned and corresponding grades, if available.
  • Course descriptions
  • SAT or ACT scores
    • ACT Code Number: 0916
    • SAT Code Number: 4060.
  • Two recommendations from adults with whom you have worked in a job, church, leadership or community service capacity.
  • Essay (Essay.pdf)

Since you don't have a traditional high school transcript, we need to have something to compare you to other students coming from traditional schools. This is where the standardized tests such as ACT and SAT come into play and provide us with a good standard for comparison.

Your essay is a very important component of your application to The College of Idaho. We have several topics from which you can choose, or you can expound on why you and you family chose to home school, and how you have matured and grown as a result of this process. Basically, we want to know about you and review your ability to express yourself.

For more information, please contact the Admission office by calling 1-800-2C-IDAHO.
