Men's Soccer Yote Notes - Edition 208.30.2010 LAST WEEK: Scrimmages vs. Walla Walla CC and Columbia Basin CC (no score kept due to NAIA rules) COMING UP: vs. Great Falls, Monday (9/6), Noon YOTES SCRIMMAGES A SUCCESS: The Coyotes got their tune-ups for the regular season over the weekend, competing in a pair of scrimmages against Walla Walla and Columbia Basin CC’s at the FC Nova Complex, south of Meridian. Although no score or statistics were kept, it was a good opportunity for head coach Brian Smith to evaluate talent in preparation for the season opener. “Walla Walla is a great side and with four days work, we demonstrated good composure on the ball and knocked it around, incorporating some of the concepts we have taught. Everyone was upbeat and we showed a good level of technical skill – which was pleasing,” said Smith. “Against Columbia Basin, we allowed all of our young kids a chance to play extended minutes and some experience – we are going in a great direction.” ABOUT GREAT FALLS: The Coyotes open up the 2010 season next Monday, hosting the University of Great Falls at Simplot Stadium. The Argonauts (2-1) will be an experienced side coming to Caldwell – having played five matches, including two this weekend in Salt Lake City. UGF has picked up a pair of early-season wins, a home win over Lethbridge (3-0) and a road win at Evergreen State (2-1), but dropped a 5-0 decision to Concordia in Portland. The Argos are led by Christian Johansen (2 goals) and are coming off their best season in program history, a 15-5 mark that advanced them to the final of the MCAC/Frontier Tournament. The two teams met once previously, with the Yotes defeating UGF, 1-0, in 2008. SIMPLOT STADIUM INFORMATION: All C of I home games will be played this season at Simplot Stadium, located one block North of the J.A. Albertson Activities Center on Blaine Avenue. Ticket prices for all Coyote games are $5.00, with seniors and children $3.00 – while season tickets will be on sale at the gate on Monday afternoon.
CCC/NAIA PRESEASON POLL: The Coyotes were picked to finish fourth in the eight-team CCC this season in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll released on Aug. 12. Defending regular-season champion, Concordia earned the top nod, followed by CCC Tournament champion, Warner Pacific, and Northwest, which advanced to the postseason in 2009. Following the Yotes in the balloting were Oregon Tech, Evergreen State, Corban, and Northwest Christian. No CCC team was ranked in the NAIA Top-25 Poll when it was released on Aug. 17, although both Concordia and Warner Pacific were listed in the “others receiving votes” category. ABOUT THE COACH: Brian Smith is in his seventh season as head coach at The C of I. During his tenure, the Coyotes have posted a 61-38-5 overall record, including Cascade Conference co-championships in 2006 and 2008, earning him CCC Coach of the Year honors on both occasions. His clubs have won at least nine games in five of his six seasons, while his 2008 squad became just the second CCC school to complete an unbeaten, untied conference slate, and set a school record with 13 consecutive wins. Smith, who helped the Coyotes to a 35-21-1 record as a player for longtime coach, John Calpin, from 1990-93, returned to his alma mater in 2004 after a successful high school coaching career in the Treasure Valley. He coached the Timberline High School boys’ team for three years, before taking over the THS girls’ program in 2002 – earning Idaho State Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2001 and Southern Idaho Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2003. After earning All-District honors as a player and graduating from The C of I with a degree in political science in 1994, Smith has assisted the Coyote program along with serving as a coach with the Boise National Soccer Club, the Les Bois United Soccer Club, and with the Idaho Olympic Development Program - currently serving as a team coach with FC Nova.
