Women's Soccer Yote Notes - Edition 208.30.2010 LAST WEEK: Scrimmage at Idaho State (no score recorded) COMING UP: at Northwest Nazarene, Thursday, 4 p.m.; vs. Great Falls, Sunday, 1 p.m. YOTES PLAY WELL IN SCRIMMAGE VS. IDAHO STATE: The Lady Yotes had their second and final scrimmage of the 2010 season on Friday night in Pocatello against Idaho State. Although the game was a “counting” game for ISU (with the Bengals “winning,” 4-1), none of the statistics from the match counted for The C of I. Head coach, Niki Taylor was very pleased with the effort against the NCAA Division I team. “I thought we played extremely well in the second half of the match, controlling the run of play for the first 30 minutes of the period. We were able to execute our plan and were able to score a goal,” said Taylor. “The players definitely noticed a difference in the pace of action – much quicker than what we have seen before.” SEASON OPENER AGAINST RIVALS: The Lady Yotes will open up the 2010 season on the road Thursday at Northwest Nazarene. The Crusaders are coming off a 3-12-4 season and were picked to finish eighth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. NNU returns nine starters from last season, including leading scorer Stacey Beckman (5 goals) and defender Jessie Cahill, both All-GNAC picks. It is the 24th all-time meeting between the teams, with NNU holding a 15-8 series edge, though the Yotes won last year’s tilt, 4-0. Under head coach Niki Taylor, the Coyotes are 2-2 against their Canyon County rivals. HOME OPENER VS. GREAT FALLS: The C of I will open their eight-game home schedule on Sunday afternoon, hosting the University of Great Falls. The Argonauts opened up their season with a 6-3 home loss to Oregon Tech last week, getting goals from Jean Escobar, Carly Armstrong, and Jenell Jackson. A year ago, UGF posted a record of 3-13-1, including a 1-5 record in Frontier Conference play. It marks the fifth-straight year the teams have met, with the Lady Yotes holding a 4-0 series edge, including a 5-2 win in Montana last year. SECOND YEAR AT SIMPLOT: For the second-straight year, the Lady Yotes will be playing their home games inside Simplot Stadium in Caldwell – just one block from The C of I campus. The 5,000-seat facility allows both C of I soccer teams the ability to play on a home pitch that is much bigger than that of their on campus field. Ticket prices for all C of I home matches are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors and students – with season passes available for purchase. CCC/NAIA PRESEASON POLL: For the second-straight year, the Lady Yotes were the clear-cut runner-up in the CCC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, receiving nine of the ten second-place votes. Leading the way was national semifinalist, Concordia, who eliminated The C of I from the postseason last year in a tough 1-0 decision. Corban was picked third, as the Warriors were the lone CCC school to defeat the Coyotes in the regular-season. Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech round out the Top-5, followed by Northwest, Eastern Oregon, Warner Pacific, Northwest Christian, and Evergreen State. The Lady Yotes earned the No. 21 spot in the NAIA Top-25 Preseason Poll, the first-ever preseason ranking in the 22-year history of the program. The C of I received 204 voter points in the poll – beginning the new season just one spot below where they finished 2009. ABOUT THE COACH: Niki Taylor is in her fifth season as head coach, having rebuilt the team into a contender, registering four-consecutive postseason appearances, an appearance in the 2007 CCC Tournament semifinals, and a spot in the 2008 and 2009 CCC Tournament championship match. For her efforts, Taylor was named 2008 and 2009 CCC Coach of the Year. Her teams have defeated four NAIA Top-25 squads, with her 2009 team winning a school-record 14 matches, helping the Lady Yotes secure their first-ever CCC regular-season title. The squad cracked the NAIA Top-25 poll for the first time, finishing the season ranked No. 20. She has an all-time record of 41-26-7, with the 41 wins the most by a women's soccer coach at The C of I, with her winning percentage of .601 tops in school history. A graduate of Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., Taylor was an honorable mention all-conference player for the Bulldogs in 1999 and 2000, helping the squad to an NCAA Division II regional championships. She went on to assist coach Mike Cannon during the 2001 season, helping TSU to the regional finals, then moved West, where she was an assistant for Steve Lucas at Boise State for three seasons. Taylor has also been involved with the Les Bois United Soccer Club for the past six years, while serving as a head coach in the Idaho Olympic Development Program, and has received her USSF "B" Coaching License.
