A Spanish major develops student proficiency in the language and an understanding of cultures in Spanish-speaking societies. Students develop advanced language skills in speaking, understanding, writing, and reading, and learn about the history, literature, and cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. Understanding Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures offers students many professional opportunities in today’s global society.
Many students choose to double major with Spanish and another discipline, because a Spanish major helps to prepare students for success in a variety of career fields and future endeavors: graduate studies, education, diplomacy, business, social work, public service, law, journalism, and health and mental health professions.
Each summer, College faculty and students partner with the Wood River YMCA to bolster educational outcomes for children in Idaho’s Wood River Valley. Dr. Jennie Daniels (Spanish) recently published her first book, which examines four different historical novels from Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, and Chile. The book extends threads of hope, as each of the four authors whose writings are explored in “Anything but Novel” offers the opportunity to address the social issues being brought to light.

One of the moments that stands out the most was when my admission counselor called me and told me I was awarded additional scholarships. I was already accepted into the school and I was given merit and other scholarships, but the only thing holding me back was still money. Before this moment I did not know if I would actually attend due to financial circumstances. This was the moment that I realized that I could attend my number one school because of these scholarships.

I hope that honestly people from Idaho learn not to count themselves out. Because I think I counted myself out for a long time. I want people to know that amazing people are cultivated everywhere, all the time, and it has nothing to do with the prestige of an environment, but with the intent of the people in the environment. And that can certainly be possible in Idaho. And that has certainly been possible for me.
