Compete with your peers as at the annual National Model United conference in New York City, which brings more than 5,000 college students and faculty from all over the world together to simulate the United Nations.
Each spring, The College of Idaho’s Model United Nation team competes head-to-head with some of the largest and well-funded Model UN programs in the world. Each entry to the conference is assigned a country, and the team researches that country and then acts as the country would at the conference.
In 2024, the College was assigned Sri Lanka, an island nation off the southern coast of India. The College’s team received NMUN’s highest honor of an Outstanding Delegation Award, which is the equivalent of a gold medal in the Model UN world.

“An Outstanding Delegation Award means our whole delegation performed well, across the board. It’s extremely difficult to achieve,” says Dr. Rob Dayley (International Affairs). “Model UN rewards preparation, initiative, leadership, and taking some social risks. It is really the quintessential high-impact practice.”
Joining the Model United Nations team has proven to be a pivotal step in my academic and professional career, driven by a deep interest in international relations. Coming from a background characterized by diverse diplomatic approaches and experiences, I have cultivated a strong ability to navigate various perspectives and seek common ground within complicated political landscapes. This not only enhanced my negotiation skills but also deepened my understanding of global diplomacy and solidified my commitment to pursuing a career in the field of international relations.

There are committees at Model UN where you are able to find a common ground more easily. For example, Sri Lanka is really big on how biodiversity matters so, for me, that was easy. But then we had someone working with LGBTQ rights, which Sri Lanka is not good about, so it becomes challenging. You have to stick to the country’s position. The experience, as a whole, was so fun. Each year I get something different out of it.

Model UN has been both a rewarding and challenging learning experience. As a biomedical sciences major with no background in international political economy, I was initially intimidated by the idea of representing countries whose foreign policies I often knew little about. However, with the exceptional training from Dr. Dayley and the support of my peers, I was able to quickly adapt and thrive in the program. This led to several successful UN simulations, where I contributed to passing progressive resolutions.

I chose The College of Idaho because of its tight-knit community. I always wanted to study in a college where I could know my professors and have face-to-face interactions with my peers. I recall my first phone call with my admissions counselor. Despite the fact that I was on a Zoom call in China, he introduced me to classmates and took me around campus with his phone. It was a life-changing experience as I made the decision to enter this prominent institute.

I chose The College of Idaho because I was really drawn to the small, tight-knit community. I grew up in a large city for most of my life, so I wanted to be in a place where I could get to know my professors and classmates personally, and where I wouldn’t feel like just another face in the crowd. The idea of being part of a supportive and closes community was really important to me, and The College of Idaho felt like the perfect fit.
