The study of communication is at least as old as written language itself. The first “scholar” of communication is also the first named historical author, the ancient Mesopotamian priestess, princess, and poet Enheduanna. As a vibrant component of a liberal arts education—since the inclusion of “rhetoric” in the trivium of subjects establishing classical Greek education—the study of communication has changed over the centuries. Today, students engage communicative inquiry as a method of developing the portable skills that will serve them in their collegiate studies and beyond. Through examining the collaborative construction and negotiation of meaning, between self and others, as it occurs within cultural contexts, students who earn a major in Communication (BA) will be able to construct effective messages in oral and written forms, as well as engage in collaborative work as interdependent group members, while adjusting their communicative strategies to account for various audiences, contexts, and diverse organizations and cultures in which they will advocate.
Students of communication also have the opportunity to take their skills and put them into use immediately, as part of their every-day lives, but also in more applied and specialized contexts, such as working for the student newspaper or engaging in intercollegiate debate tournaments with the award-winning Howling Yotes.
The Howling ‘Yotes share with Idaho News 6 how they might prepare the candidates for the presidential debates, which focused on practice, preparation and pivoting when needed.
Join the Howling ‘Yotes! For students interested in participating in British Parliamentary Debate, we offer scholarships for incoming students—based on competitive merit and competitive potential.
I chose The College of Idaho because of the tight-knit community, winning culture in the Men’s Basketball program, and excellent academic reputation. I have gained more than just an education; I have learned how to be a better friend, a more curious learner, and a leader. I chose The College of Idaho because of its tight-knit community. I always wanted to study in a college where I could know my professors and have face-to-face interactions with my peers. I recall my first phone call with my admissions counselor. Despite the fact that I was on a Zoom call in China, he introduced me to classmates and took me around campus with his phone. It was a life-changing experience as I made the decision to enter this prominent institute.

I chose to be a Yote because of the close campus culture and spirit that I felt on my initial campus visit and still feel as a senior at the College. Students support each other in their extracurricular activities and make the College a fun experience for anyone who chooses to attend. One of my favorite experiences is Homecoming weekend. Getting to meet former Yotes and make new friends is something I look forward to each year.
