Ours is an age when both non-human and human well-being depend on reframing conventional questions and developing ourselves as agents of intellectual change. Through the Environmental Studies (BA) major, we seek to understand the complex and influential interactions between the conceptual and the material aspects of human-environment relations. Students majoring in Environmental Studies and planning to go on to professional or graduate school are advised to pursue a minor, specialization or double major in an accompanying, complementary field of study, such as conservation biology, geography and geoscience, history, law, philosophy, international political economy, or political economy.
Environmental Studies prepares skilled critical thinkers who are ready to provide leadership in a variety of career fields. Education, public policy, resource management, public health, public administration, international development, non-profit work, and the sciences are popular choices for our graduates. Many alumni also go on to graduate school to study environmental law and policy, economics, environmental literature, plant and animal biology, and other related sciences.

I chose The College of Idaho because, from my very first visit, the school felt like a home. Being from rural Idaho, with a class of 15 students, I was accustomed to a close-knit community. I was pleased to find the same sense of connection at the College. The staff, students, and faculty were exceptionally friendly. The atmosphere that they created as warm and welcoming. It was clear that this was a place where people genuinely cared for one another.

The first CofI professor I met was Dr. Mark Gunderson, and I recall being amazed at his open honesty, his sense of humanity, and his broad knowledge base. As I met more College faculty, I realized that Dr. Gunderson is not an outlier – he is an excellent example of how incredible all CofI faculty are. Though there are other universities I could have gone to, that was a huge factor that made the College very appealing.

One of the requirements I was looking for in schools was that there needed to be a music program that I could participate in, even if I was not a major or minor. At CofI, I have been able to do just that and perform at football and basketball games, concerts and operas. I can still have my passion for music while exploring new passions like rock climbing and writing.
B.A in History and Environmental Studies with a minor in Communication.
The College positioned me well to see the whole picture and put the pieces together throughout my career. I work to solve environmental problems with engineers, construction workers, bankers, business executives, regulators, community stakeholders, scientists, and consultants. I am never the expert in the room, but can put disparate pieces together in a way that has made me a valuable addition to every team I've worked on.
