Hendren Hall

The mission of the Health & Wellness Center is to optimize the college experience for all students by addressing their physical and mental health concerns and by promoting healthy behaviors and lifestyle choices. To achieve optimal health in our campus community, the Center provides a team of health professionals including a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, medical assistant, and licensed mental health counselors.
Our licensed counselors offer free, short-term, confidential counseling services while creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all students. We support student mental health and wellness through individual counseling, community referrals, and educational programming. In the event that the student requires more intensive medical or mental health needs, students will be referred to a local provider.

Students whose needs cannot be accommodated within the overall scope of our short-term counseling services are referred to community resources. Similarly, students whose needs require a particular type of expertise that is not offered within the scope of our short-term counseling services are also referred to the community. These resources can help you find a psychologist, psychiatrist, or support group near you.
The Sensory Room is a safe space in the Health & Wellness Center open to all students for relaxation, studying, and sensory stimulation, stress management. Sensory rooms are specifically designed to provide immersive, multisensory experiences to help students with sensory integration disorders, as well as students experiencing stress and anxiety.
The Sensory Room is generally open Monday – Friday 8 AM to 6 PM. During the school week, no appointment is necessary to visit the Sensory Room though the Sensory Room may be closed intermittently for counseling appointments and as a safe room for students to decompress during difficult situations. Contact hwc@collegeofidaho.edu to request a visit outside of the regularly scheduled hours. The Wellness Center front desk student employee can always assist you to access the Sensory Room.
Sensory Rooms provide a safe and interactive environment for students to explore their senses and improve the way they process new information. Sensory rooms aim to create a feeling of safety where sensory stimulation is within a student’s control.
Although sensory rooms have historically been designed for children, research indicates people of all ages benefit from the use of sensory rooms when coping with stress, anxiety, emotional regulation, and sensory stimulation. Sensory rooms can also provide neurodiverse students the opportunity to manage emotions and cope with overwhelming situations in a healthy way. Research shows that providing a stimulating environment can increase concentration and focus attention, improve coordination and motor development, promote mental and physical relaxation, promote cognitive development and increased brain function, foster creativity, promote social interactions, and provide a safe environment where students can freely express themselves.
All information discussed in the Health & Wellness Center is CONFIDENTIAL. The exception to confidentiality is as listed under Idaho State Law requiring health professionals to report limited information if there is a reasonable suspicion that a minor, handicapped or elderly person is being abused, if ordered to do so in a court of law; or if a person presents a serious danger of harming themselves or others.
