The College of Idaho’s Biomedical Science major is designed for students interested in careers in health professions, such as doctors, physician assistants/associates (PAs), dentists, physical therapists, optometrists and more as well as students interested in research in biomedical sciences.
Our alumni include many successful doctors, PAs, nurses, dentists, physical therapists, veterinarians, pharmacists, researchers, botanists, zoologists, professors, and scientists. Graduates enjoy a high placement rate into graduate school, and many undergraduates get a head start on their research careers through grant-funded faculty-student research programs such as INBRE (IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence) and SWITCH (Southwest Idaho: The Comprehensive Herbaria).
As part of a collaboration that has existed between the College and the Salmon River Clinic since 1975, Fawn Hoffman ’25, a biomedical science major, shares her experience interning at a rural health clinic and her aspirations to become physician assistant/associate (PA).
After majoring in biomedical science at the College, Abucar Mohamed ’24 is heading to Cornell University to complete an MD/PhD program. Watch a highlight of “Nic Sick,” a documentary about teen vaping in Idaho in which Mohamed is featured as an expert based on PhD-level research he completed while at the College.
When it came time to choose a college, The College of Idaho felt like the perfect fit. The breathtaking outdoor opportunities in Idaho and the surrounding states made the decision even easier, as I could continue the adventures I loved. On top of that, an incredible scholarship package made The College of Idaho feel like home, and I knew it was the right place to spend the next few years of my life.

I chose The College of Idaho because of the tight-knit community, winning culture in the Men’s Basketball program, and excellent academic reputation. During my time at the College, my initial expectations have been far exceeded. I have gained more than just an education; I have learned how to be a better friend, a more curious learner, and a leader. The College of Idaho has helped me realize that I am capable of so much more in my life.

The College of Idaho has a diverse student body, an intimate atmosphere, and an immense amount of financial aid. I wanted to be challenged and to get the most out of my education, so a more individualized learning environment with plenty of career building opportunities as a perfect fit.

I like to think that The College of Idaho chose me. As a high school senior, I knew that I wanted an undergraduate career that would challenge me to develop holistically. More importantly, I needed to develop my own voice and decide how I wanted to make my impact on the world professionally and personally.

I came to the College because I knew the academic opportunities it could provide me. However, my experiences from the start of freshman year to now have shown me that the College can provide even more. Between the chance to perform successful biomedical research, the ability to form meaningful relationships with faculty, unique internship opportunities, and the valuable career guidance I have received, the College exceeded my expectations and given me the possibility to do even more.

I was especially amazed by the high acceptance rate to graduate programs, such as law and medical school Coming from a small, rural high school, I was also attracted to the smaller class sizes, allowing for stronger connections with professors and peers.
